Oklahoma balances next to the US
Card balances per adult are up 27.7% since 2019, slower than the national +28.3% (20th fastest of 51). Balances fell from $2,710 in 2019 to $2,450 in 2020, when spending dropped and stimulus paid down cards, then climbed back to $3,460 by 2025.
Lower card debt does not mean lower rates. A $3,460 balance at a typical card APR still costs hundreds a year in interest, and a smaller balance is often cheaper to clear with a 0% balance transfer than with a loan that carries an origination fee. In Oklahoma, cards, auto loans and student loans add up to $14,320 per adult, 7% below the national $15,470.

Personal loan rules in Oklahoma
Oklahoma lets licensed lenders charge tiered rates tied to the federal funds rate on larger loans, and flat acquisition and monthly handling fees on small loans (about $3,660 or less in 2025). Those small-loan fees can mean APRs well over 100%.
- Supervised loans (general): Greater of: 32% plus the federal funds rate on the first $7,000, 23% plus fed funds on $7,000 to $11,000, 20% plus fed funds above $11,000; or 25% plus fed funds on the whole balance. Plus a one-time lender closing fee (Okla. Stat. tit. 14A, § 3-508A)
- Small supervised loans (statute says $3,000 or less; indexed to $3,660 as of July 1, 2025): Instead of the rates above: an acquisition charge of up to 10% of principal plus a monthly installment account handling charge that rises with loan size (indexed amounts, for example $26.35 per month for about $461 to $659 and $39.53 for about $1,647 to $1,976 as of July 1, 2025) (Okla. Stat. tit. 14A, § 3-508B; Okla. Stat. tit. 14A, § 1-106)
The National Consumer Law Center puts the highest APR allowed in Oklahoma at 204% on a $500, six-month loan and 56% on a $2,000, two-year loan (State Annual Percentage Rate (APR) Caps For $500, $2,000 and $10,000 Installment Loans (NCLC fact sheet, December 2025; figures current as of September 2025)).
Non-bank lenders need a state license to make these loans. License: Supervised Lender license, issued by the Oklahoma Department of Consumer Credit (Okla. Stat. tit. 14A, § 3-502).
Dollar amounts in these sections are adjusted for inflation by the Department of Consumer Credit under 14A § 1-106, so check the regulator's current figures. NCLC's high figures for a $500 loan come from the small-loan fee structure.

Your options in Oklahoma
- Balance transfer card: a 0% introductory APR can beat a loan if you can clear the balance before the promo ends. Balance transfer vs personal loan.
- Debt consolidation loan: one fixed payment and end date, worth it when the APR is clearly below your card rates. How to compare offers.
- Debt management plan: a nonprofit credit counseling agency negotiates lower rates with your card issuers. Useful if you cannot qualify for a loan. DMP vs consolidation.
What consolidating could save at OK numbers
Take the Oklahoma average of $3,460 and pay it off in 36 months. At a 24% card APR the payment is about $136 a month and the interest about $1,427. With a 12% consolidation loan the payment drops to about $115 and the interest to about $677, a difference of $750.
People who carry a balance usually owe more than the per-adult average. On $8,500 the same comparison is $3,505 of card interest against $1,664 on the loan. These rates are examples, not offers. Your APR depends on your credit, income and the lender, and an origination fee reduces the savings. See what lenders look for.

Oklahoma debt consolidation FAQ
How much credit card debt does the average person in Oklahoma have?
$3,460 per adult with a credit file at the end of 2025, according to New York Fed Consumer Credit Panel/Equifax data. That is 20% below the US figure of $4,350 and ranks 43rd of 51. The figure includes people with no card balance, so people who do carry a balance typically owe more.
Are more people in Oklahoma falling behind on credit cards?
13.28% of card balances in Oklahoma were 90 or more days past due in 2025, compared with 8.91% in 2019 (up 4.4 points). The national rate was 12.36%.
Can a consolidation loan lower what borrowers in Oklahoma pay in interest?
It can if the loan APR is well below your card APRs. On a $3,460 balance paid off over 36 months, a 24% card APR costs about $1,427 in interest and a 12% loan about $677. Rates depend on your credit and the lender, loans are not available in every state, and fees can shrink the savings.
Is a balance transfer better than a loan for a smaller Oklahoma balance?
Often, yes. If you can pay off the balance within a 0% promo period, a transfer fee of a few percent usually costs less than loan interest. A fixed-rate loan is the safer choice if you need longer than the promo period.
