Who we are

Smart Debt Relief is an independent, reader-supported publisher. We are not a bank, a lender, or a credit counseling agency. Our editorial team researches and writes about personal loans, debt consolidation, and credit so readers can understand their options before they act.

We do not publish the names, photos, or credentials of individual staff members. We do this deliberately: our content is produced and reviewed as a team, following the process described in our editorial policy, rather than being the work of a single named author. If you want to know who stands behind a specific article, the byline reads "Editorial team," and the article's review process is the same one described on that page.

How this site started

Smart Debt Relief was built around a simple observation: most people looking into a personal loan or debt consolidation are doing it for the first time, under some amount of pressure, and the sites explaining their options are often written to sell rather than to inform. We set out to write the version we'd want a family member to read first: plain language, clear limits on what a loan can and can't do, and no pressure tactics.

What we cover

Our articles and guides focus on:

  • Personal loans and how they work, including rates, terms, and eligibility
  • Debt consolidation options and how to compare them
  • Credit scores and reports, and how they affect borrowing
  • Budgeting and general money management

We aim to explain these topics in plain language, using primary sources like the CFPB and Federal Reserve where figures or rules are cited. Our sourcing standards are set out in the editorial policy. When we compare products, we describe the actual terms a lender publishes rather than repeating a lender's own marketing language as fact.

What we don't do

It's just as important to be clear about our limits.

  • We are not a lender and do not issue loans.
  • We do not make credit decisions or set loan terms.
  • We do not provide personalized financial, legal, or tax advice.
  • We do not collect payment information or process loans directly on this site.
  • Nothing on this site should be treated as a recommendation for your specific situation. Readers should speak with a licensed financial advisor, credit counselor, or attorney before making a decision.

How our content is produced

Articles are drafted against a set of sourcing and formatting standards, then reviewed and edited by our editorial team before they go live. Drafts may involve AI-assisted research or writing tools, but every published article is reviewed and edited by a person before it is posted, and the figures in it are checked against the primary source cited. Full detail is in our editorial policy.

We also revisit older articles on a regular cadence. Rates and program details change, and an article that was accurate when published can go stale. When we find an outdated figure, we correct it and update the article's date.

How the site is funded

Smart Debt Relief earns money in two ways: a referral fee when a reader submits a loan request through our get started form that a lender accepts, and affiliate commissions from some lender links in our articles. Neither arrangement changes what we write or which facts we report. The full breakdown, including the disclosures our partners require us to state, is on our how we make money page.

What we will never say

As a matter of reader protection, we hold our own content to rules stricter than what is legally required. You will not see us:

  • Promise that approval is certain, or suggest an offer was already decided before you applied
  • Claim an offer comes with no review of your credit history
  • Describe use of our form or site as costing nothing to use
  • Call a single product the top pick for every reader, or claim it carries the smallest or largest possible cost, without stating what that claim is based on
  • Use a countdown, deadline, or other scarcity language to rush a reader's decision

Where a lender partner's own disclosures use stronger or different language than we would use ourselves, we link to their site rather than restate their claims as our own.
